南通早期现代化呈现出在相对封闭的环境下进行,原有基础极其薄弱,由绅商发起和领导,整体推进、协调发展,起步早,起点高,发展速度快等特点,由于多方面的原因,1922年起南通现代化事业严重受挫,但给我们留下了宝贵的经验教训。

Earlier modernization in Nantong had its own characteristics. Due to many causes its process had been seriously hampered ever since 1922, leaving behind abundant valuable experience and lessons.
