萧友梅先生是我国近现代音乐史上最早出国学习音乐而且时间最长的学生 ,同时也是第一位在国外获得博士学位的音乐家。他一生致力于音乐教育事业 ,创办了我国第一个专业音乐教育机构———北京大学音乐传习所 ;编写了我国最早的一批专业音乐教材 ;创作了我国最早的一批学校歌曲 ;最早将西方音乐理论及技法引进中国 ,并作了比较全面、系统的介绍 ;创建了我国近代音乐史上第一支完全由中国人组成的西式管弦乐队 ;在专业音乐创作方面 ,他是中国最早涉足西方军乐合奏、管弦乐合奏曲、艺术歌曲创作的作曲家 ;在音乐理论研究方面 ,他最早开展中西音乐的比较研究。他是我国近现代专业音乐教育的奠基人 ,专业音乐创作的先行者 ,音乐理论研究的探索者 ,专业音乐的拓荒者 ,为发展中国近现代音乐文化事业作出了不可磨灭的功绩。

Mr. Xiao Youmei is the earliest music student to go abroad in the Chinese modern and contemporary music history.He was also the first Chinese person to attain the music PhD in abroad. He paid more attention on music education and built the first Chinese music education institute—Music Institute of Peking University. At the same time, he compiled the music textbooks, produced the earliest campus songs, introduced the western music theory and music technique into China and explained it in details. He also organized the first Chinese Orchestra from the Chinese people totally. In professional music creating, he covered in the west army instrumental ensemble, orchestra ensemble and producing arts songs very early. In music theory aspect, he suggested to study the differences between the west and east music by using the comparative method. He was the founder, forerunner and investigator on the Chinese professional music education. He made a great contribution on the Chinese modern and contemporary music education.
