At the beginning of the 20th century, with the influence of the radicalism of the May 4thMovement, many artists were pessimistic about traditional Chinese painting, appealing to the reform of Chinese painting with western arts. Inthat time, most works of Shanghai School contained commercial flavour. Keeping a clear head in that situation, and viewing Chinese arts at ahigher cultural attitude, Mr. Wu Qinmu threw himself into studying traditional arts, learning from ancient artists at the first step and thenfrom the nature. Getting rid of vulgar commercial taste in most artists in Shanghai School, his works show strict structures, rich changes ,andmild elegancy with his pure ink and stroke, all of which contain the artistic spirit of literati painting.
