The inner ear decompression sickness in guinea pigs was studied with auditory electro-physiological test, histopathological, transmission electron microscopic and enzyme histochemical techniques. The animals with inner ear decompression sickness showed a significant increase in hearing threshold soon after decompression. Histopathological study demonstrated that cochlear bleeding into the fluid-filled spaces, degeneration of Corti's organ or both occurred in the animals. Transmission electron microscopy revealed an edematous cytoplasm and grossly distorted outer hair cell body. The decreased activity of succinic dehydrogenase was found by enzyme histochemistry. It is suggested that inner ear decompression sickness does cause severe damage to the cochlear system and that it is necessary to improve inner ear microcirculation for treating the inner ear decompression sickness in addition to recompression therapy.
