Chu Shi Song is a work lacking a seal but there can be no doubts regarding its authenticity; the main questions hinge on its dating and evaluating the veracity of the arguments of earlier scholars. From the later inscription and colophon of Mi Youren and from the dating styles adopted from Song dynasty authenticating collectors, it would seem that Chu Shi Song is a Sui dynasty work. Evaluating the comments by earlier scholars that it is variously the calligraphy of the Western Jin calligrapher Suo Jing, the writing of the Southern Liang scholar 'Xiao' or the work of a 'Sui Master', we know that it must be the work of a renowned calligrapher. In light of the fact that it is a work by a renowned Sui dynasty calligrapher that has survived for more than a millennium and that it has been held in the palace collection on two occasions, it was the responsibility of the Palace Museum to purchase the work and restore it to its original home.
