Because of the great influence of Chinese culture on Englishteaching and learning in China, much importance is nowattached to vocabulary learning. While it is unlikely that thecommunicative approach will be adopted for those intermediateor advanced learners at college English level, a lexical approachcan be more suitable for college English education, wherevocabulary (lexical items ) is of great importance as it isconsidered institutionalized and collocated. In such anapproach, vocabulary begins to take on a new role of organizingthe target language in addition to being meaningful in itself.
