The mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) consists of a unique population of primary sensory cell somata located within the central nervous system which transmits proprioceptive sensory signals from orofacial region. Because of the specificity of configuration and distribution, the understanding of Vme is limited. Recently, with the development of methodology, the study on Vme is becoming one of the highlights in neuroscience. We reviewed the progress of morphological and electrophysiological studies in recent years, which will make contribution to the understanding of transmition and regulation mechanisms of orofacial region porprioceptive sensory information.
