Purpose; To testify the importance of acquiring the respiration support during the oral language development for thedeaf children, (1) Established the norms of the maximum phonation time (MPT) of Chinese children; (2) Embodied the guiding value ofMPT in the speech and language training for the deaf children; (3) The abdomen breathing is suitable for the speech and languagedevelopment of the deaf children. Subjects: In Shanghai, selected 840 normal children aged 4-17, 29 deaf children with hearing aids whoadapted the thorax breathing in several provisional rehabilitation center, and 25 deaf children who adapted the abdomen breathingthrough one year of breath training from several countries were randomly selected. Methods: Respectively taking the three subsidiaryexperiments, in which the MPTs of each group were tested according to the purpose of every experiment by“Real time Analysis'.Results: (1) MPTs had significant difference in both age groups and gender groups. (2) Before training, MPTs of deaf children wereshorter than the normal children, and after one year of training, the deaf children had the longer MPT than the normal children. (3)MPTs of thorax breathing were much shorter than the abdomen breathing. Conclusion: As the optimum parameter of measuring thequality of speech breathing, MPT can be used broadly in the speech training for the deaf children, and helps to establish the naturalabdomen breathing style in the process of speech.'
