Lectures on Political Science by Yan Fu: Where Did It Come from?

严复 190 5年撰写的《政治讲义》历来被认为是中国人自己撰写的第一部近代政治学著作。事实上 ,从其文本渊源来看 ,该书基本上参照 19世纪英国剑桥大学近代史教授约翰·西莱 (SirJohnSeeley)的著作《政治科学导论》 (AnIntroductiontoPoliticalScience)写成。严复政治思想之来源比较复杂 ,研究严复思想 ,不仅应从中西文比较的角度探讨严译文本 ,同样也要关注晚清时期的政治语境。

Yan Fus Lectures on Political Science (1905) is widely believed to be the first work in modern political science by a Chinese. It borrows heavily in fact from 19 th Cambridge scholar John Seeleys Introduction to Political Science . The sources of Yans political science were, of course, somewhat more complex than Seeley alone. One should in any case read his translations in their late Qing political context.
