In order to investigate myocardial histopathological alterations of chro- nic high altitude exposure and pro- tective effects of salvia miltorrhiza Bunge (SMB) on the lesions, 28 rats were used and devided randomly into experimental group(injected with SMB) and control group (injected with pla- cebo). They were carried into plateau (3416m above sea level) from sea level (Shanghai 5 m above sea level) within 6 days. The rats were sacrificed de- capitedly following 8 weeks and the histopathological and ultrastructural altertions were examined. The results show that there were no significant differences between both ventricles and septum in cardiac les- ions, it was found that myocardial lesions of chronic high altitude exp- osure should included both myocardial injury and microcirulatory disturban- ces. The results also show that SMB has significant protective effects to the chronic hypoxic myocardium ex- posed to high altitude.
