Intuitive deviants among native speakers exist objectively, as deviants exist among dif ferent languages. The deviants result from functional categories. on the one hand the number of the functional categories extending the matrix verb may be different, and on the other hand the formal feathers or phonological requirements of the functional categories may be different. The differences re present in the mental lexicon.
