Steel industries in Japan have been seeking environmental excellence for sustainable development. This is an overview of the efforts for reduced environmental impact made by Japan during the last decade of the 20 th century. The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF) launched a voluntary action program in 1996 for addressing environmental issues. It placed priority on two major items, namely, prevention of global warming and establishment of recycle-oriented society. The action plan set a specific goal to reduce the energy for steel production by 10?% in 2010 as compared to 1990, assuming that the steel production level would stay at 100 million tons per year. An additional program (use of waste plastic) will make it 11.5?% in total, adding 1.5?% to the original goal. As a result of the internal efforts of the industry, CO 2 emission in 2001 has decreased by 9.2?% since 1990. Additionally, the use of high-performance steels and by-products has delivered a 6.1?% CO 2 reduction in 2000. For recycle-oriented society, which is another goal of the action program, reduction of steel wastes and increased recycling of steel cans have been implemented successfully toward 2010.
