斯堪的纳维亚现代主义设计改革和探索自19世纪下半叶开始,其间历经工艺美术运动时期、新艺术运动时期。20世纪20年代,形成了以功能主义为核心的现代主义设计。随后,经过不断的修正、完善和发展,终于在20世纪40年代发展了其独具特色的柔性功能主义设计,并确立了其在世界设计舞台上的地位和水平。

From the latter part of the 19th century, the modem design reform of Scandinavia has began. Through the Art and Craft movement, Art Nouveau, the Scandinavia reform has got a big progress in the modern design. In the twenties of the 20th century, Scandinavia established functional modem design. Then, having taken a great effort to modify and develop functional design, in the thirties and fourties of the 20th century Scandinavia developed the original flexible functionalism and set up its international status.
