The change in the Australia-Britain relation was a key link to the debate about the ownership of New Guinea in the 1880s, and a vital issue of Australia’s federation movement as well. The debate showed that the status of a British colony was becoming more and more helpless to the development of Australia. Consequently, the Australia-British relation originally established on the basis of relation between the mother country and the colony was gradually changing. The tendency of this kind of change was not the obedience of Australia, but the unity between colonies and the separation of Australia from Britain. That is the connotation of Australia’s federation movement.
