周作人在本质上是一个自由主义知识分子。与中国现代其他自由主义知识分子的自由思想不同,周作人是自由至上主义,表现为极端个人主义。周作人的悲剧性命运既有自由主义在中国悲剧性结局的普遍性,又有周作人对自由主义误解的特殊性。这是抗战时期周作人附敌之根本原因。

Zhou Zuoren was a scholar in essence. Different from other ones, he asked for absolute freedom whose expressive form was extreme individualism. His tragic fate was in fact the tragic end of liberalism in China as well as his misunderstanding of liberalism. This is the reason why he surrendered to the Japanese invaders.
