The Song Dynasty enjoyed splendid culture. Meishan, a small county in southwest Sichuan, was one of the most developed cultural areas. This is closely related to a large-scale immigration after the Tang Dynasty, Wudai Period (period of five small dynasties) and 'Jingkang Calamities' in the Song Dynasty. Meishan was an area receiving more immigrants than other regions. A great number of 'Outstanding Class' from Northern China brought their advanced culture from Yellow River valley to Meishan, which combined with native 'Bashu Culture', then changed from 'Clan Culture' into 'Cultural Clan'. Some of these people became cultural elites in their own areas through education and Royal Examination.
