People have gone through three periods in their recognition and exploration of language. Among the three, the modern linguistic perspective, coming into being in the late 20th century, reflects the characteristics of language more scientifically and accurately than the other two. The modern linguistic perspective has a profound and lasting influence upon foreign language teaching in terms of improving teachers understanding of various factors in FLT, helping them form scientific perspectives of FLT, and eventually improving the quality and efficiency of it.
