The paper reviews the development of DF_4 diesel locomotive and its power unit 16V240 ZJ diesel engine since 1970s, covering a series of 7 types of diesel engines and 7 types of diesel locomotives. This series of locomotives have been regarded as the main type of its kind on Chinese railway. He introduces the latest products of this series developed in cooperation with foreign companies, of which the technical & economic specifications have reached the international advanced level of the 1980s.
