The Evolution of Evolutionist Philosophy in Modern China

近代以来的时代变局催发了中华民族追求变革和富强的强烈愿望,进化论由于迎合了这个心理而被迅速接受和广泛传播开来。进化论在中国的发展经历了一个从自然律扩张到历史律直至世界观的过程,这种扩张有其历史的合理性及其内在的逻辑。从康有为到严复,再从孙中山到章太炎,他们对进化论的探讨时间上前后相继,理论上不断深化,在中国近代思想史上共同演绎了一个进化论哲学的阶段。

The great changes taking place in modern China aroused the Chinese peopele's desire for reform, prosperity and national power, as a result of which evolutionism was readily accepted and extensively propagated. The development of evolutionism in China went through two stages of expansion, one from the sphere of nature to history, the other from history to world outlook, each of which has its historical inevitability and inner logic. From Kang Youwei to Yan Fu, to Sun Zhongshan, and finally to Zhang Taiyan, the study of evolutionism underwent the process of deepening, thus forming a stage of development in evolutionist philosophy in China.
