中国运河之都济宁 ,亦被誉称为“江北小苏州”,其重要的因素之一 ,就是有着与苏州相似的千姿百态的私家园林。明代中晚期已有 40处 ,清代有增有减仍保持在 40处左右 ,清末民初则锐减到 2 0余处。私家园林荒圮增加 ,是随着运河兴衰而变化的 ,这反映出私家园林的修造乃至城市建设 ,是因了运河漕运、商贸业的发展繁盛而出现 ,并随着运河的兴衰而变迁的。它给近古济宁的城市环境增添了亮色 ,由此也折射出了运河文化深厚的内涵。

Jining, the capital of China canal, is also called 'North Suzhou' because it has similar various private villas with Suzhou. There were 40 villas in the late of Ming dynasty. The number of villas still kept about 40 in Qing dynasty although it was increasing and decreasing now and then. It was reduced sharply to 20 by the end of Qing dynasty. The condition of private villas depends on the ups and downs of canal, that is, the building of private villas and city owes to the transportation of canal and prosperity of commercial trade, and also changes with the ups and downs of canal.It added Jining city bright and color; therefore canal cultural connotation was reflected.
