The May Fourth enlightenment movement was inspired by yet fundamentally different from the European cultures and ideas since the Enlightenment. The fact provided a premise and meanings for the revival of Chinese New Literature. The movement provided new writers, new intellectual horizons and new and diverse cultural resources, which combined to make a revolution possible in Chinese literature. However, the self awakening of new writers and the relative independence of literature appeared when the tide of the enlightenment movement began to ebb, rather than when it was at its peak time. It was during the ebb that the irrational elements in literature that had been overlooked and even suppressed broke the restriction of reason, found their own raison d'être, and became radiant with artistry and beauty.
