The spirit of the times varies with different historical periods。The French epic La Chanson de Roland (The Song of Roland) in the Middle Ages is one of the best heroic epics (les chansons de gestes) in medieval times. In its production of the image of Roland it reflects the spirit of the times of the Middle Ages: devout belief in God, patriotism and loyalty to the king, worship of heroes, and prizing of friendship. It also reflects the pondering over the problems of mankind with the background of Christian culture and transformation in the ideas of heroes. All those are based on and transcend Christian ideology.
