Through an analysis of the English translation of Six Chapters of a Floating Life and some other translated works, this paper is intended to show that since acceptability is the primary concern of most translators, translators have to take into account the various norms in the target culture and think twice in the choice of a source text and the specific translation strategy. It is also found that versions of a comparatively weak culture are very likely to be accepted and even welcomed by the target culture if they are not in radical contradiction with the stronger target norms, fit the target culture's expectation of the source culture, and meet the psychological need of the target society.
