Entering the Fifth Generation of Distance Education:a Case Study of Athabasca University

摘要 本文旨在分析影响全球性高等教育需求的某些趋势,描述目前学术界对组织结构进行改革的推动力,探讨在20世纪的远程教育变革历程。通过对阿萨巴斯卡大学商业学院的个案研究,阐述了技术革新与远程院校的组织结构特征的结合,能为全球大学教育提供更有效的教育模式,并让我们重新认识这一学术领域。在这一变革过程中,不同的大学并不需要放弃自己独有的特征。 This paper reviews some trends impacting global demand for university education, describes several forces for organizational change operating at present within the academy, and reviews the evolution of distance education in the 20th century. A case study of the School of Business at Athabasca University illustrates how a combination of technological innovation and alternate organizational structures characteristic of many distance-based universities can inform more effective models of university education worldwide and reconceptualize our understanding of the academy. In the process, the distinctive hallmarks of universities need not be relinquished.
