This essay focuses on an analysis of the relationship between international relations (IR) theory and ethics.It poses the question of the complicity of IR theory in the September 11 event.To begin with,the essay discusses Weber's ideas of “science as a vocation”and“value-free social science.”After examining the role of ten core hypotheses in the construction of international relations theory,the essay argues that the international relations theory that seems to be neutral and universal and established on the basis of a specified concept of violence,in effect,reflects the interests of the dominant power.It is this problem of IR theory that,in turn,provided an impetus for the outbreak of the September 11 event.
