The Standard English Proficiency Program (S. E. P. ) in Oakland Unified School District acknowledges African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as a legitimate language in classrooms and sets up AAVE as the bridge to teaching Standard English. Its pedagogical value to Standard American English can be understood in several senses:1st, AAVE can be a bridge between new information and already known information; 2nd, AAVE is a medium device between language 'receptive ability' and 'productive ability' ; 3rd, teachers can help black children recognize language diversity through comparing, translating and providing linguistic knowledge of AAVE and standard English and help them improve standard American English.
