The'present author holds that Rewriting the History of Gaolan County, Dialect Volume, written by ZHANG Guo-chang of late Qing Dynasty, is the earliest document extant in the study of the Lanzhou dialect. The paper, after giving a brief introduction to its author, explains the formula he employed in the writing, reveals the information concerning the dialect in his amendment (you an) to the book, examines the 30 dialect words that the book discussed and investigates their diachronic evolution.
