On Chinese trade (really smuggling trade),Wakefield encouraged English,America n and other countries' smugglers to establish some commercial stations on the co astal islands of China, provided that “the market-place was free, that is,open to all nations on perfectly equal terms.” He also had an idea of multi-sided tr a de “supposing that cheap food were raised in the English colonies of Australia, which, though far from England, are near to China, the English might buy such fo od with manufactured goods; with that food buy tea and silver of the Chinese; an d with that tea and silver buy cheap com of the Canadians.” This was much compl i cated than using English manufactured goods to exchange for tea and silver from the Chinese directly. In this model,China,as one side of the four sides, had b een put on the same status as British colonies.
