《简爱》文中大量引用或化用《圣经》。小说女主人公简爱形象的塑造,同基督教文化有着密不可分的关系。简爱性格中对纯真爱情与自我价值和尊严的顽强追求,对情欲的自我克制,以及她通过自我牺牲完成的对情欲的罪恶的救赎,都同《圣经》中玛丽亚形象构成重合。而简爱性格中对女性性爱欲望与生命激情的率直表述,又同《圣经》中夏娃形象形成暗喻。作家在小说文本中有意寻求玛丽亚与夏娃形象的调解,但由于二者原本的对立,造成简爱形象的不协调,从而消减了简爱形象的丰富性与悲剧性。

Jane Eyre” quotes a lot from the Bible. The image moulding of the heroine, Jane Eyre, has a very close tie with Christian culture. Jane's indomitable pursuit of the true love and self-dignity, the self-restraint of the sexual passion, and her atone for her guilty feeling of lust, all coincide with the image of Eve in the Bible. And the unreserved expression to the females' lust and living passion constitute metaphor with the image of Eve in the Bible. The author tried to harmonize the image between Maria and Jane Eyre. But due to the original contrast, it produces the inharmony, and therefore, reduces the richness and tragedy.
