A Combination of Rebellion and Personal Ambition---Analysis of Julien's Character

司汤达是十九世纪现实主义大师之一。他在《红与黑》中通过主人公于连的命运揭示了法国王政复辟时期小资产阶级和平民知识分子的追求与反抗。于连是个性格矛盾的人物,一方面他具有平民的反抗意识,另一方面他又具有极强的个人野心,他的这种性格是由那个时代与社会造成的,他的悲剧又是由他的复杂矛盾的性格决定的。本文着重分析了于连性格中的这两方面。

F. Stendhal is one of the most famous writers of critical realism in the 19th century. In his novel 'The Red & Black', he revealed the pursuit and rebellion of the common intellectuals who belonged to the lower middle class through the fate of the hero Julien. Julien Sorel is a person with a contradictory character. He has the common people's sense of rebellion, but he also has a very strong personal ambition. His character is affected by the social environment of that time and his tragedy is decided by his contradictory character. This paper mainly analyzes the two aspects of Junien's character.
