Thomas Hardy is a Bible-influenced writer whose The Mayor of Casterbridge is set against an incarnated biblical world. This thesis focuses on a comparative study on a selected narrative of Saul and David from Bible and a story of Henchard and Farfrae from The Mayor of Casterbridge. It intends to analyze clashes between society and man to catch the essential spirit of tragedy in term of scapegoat: clashes between the Old and the New.
