Structural cohesion in English discourse and its translation

在重新认识语篇衔接概念及其分类的基础上探讨英语语篇中结构衔接(主要体现在名词、动词、小句的替代、省略与同构关系上)的表现形式以及这些形式是如何被转换成汉语的。探讨的结果发现:一、结构衔接在少数情况下是可以对等或对应转换的,而大多数情况下需要对衔接结进行充实后才能表达清楚;二、结构的衔接性是有条件的,这主要地取决于译入语———目的语(即汉语)的结构表现形式;三、结构衔接在汉语中通常是以显性形式而不是隐性形式出现。认识这一差别,有利于语篇制作和语篇翻译。

This paper, based on re-examination of the conception and the classification of discourse cohesion, studies the presentation forms of structural cohesion (mainly embodied in the substitution of nouns, verbs, clauses and their omissions, and in similar structures) in English discourse and how these forms are translated (or converted) into Chinese. The result of the study shows: 1. structural cohesion can be converted into Chinese equally only in a few cases, and in most cases it is necessary to make the cohesive ties meaningful so as to make the presentation clear in conversion; 2. Convertibility of structural cohesion is sometimes conditional, which mainly depends on the structural presentation forms of the translated or target language ( i .e., Chinese); 3. Structural cohesion in Chinese usually takes the forms of explicitness rather than implicitness.
