The role of engravings of animals made by the early inhabitants in the Steppes such as Saks and Huns was basically functional. Being made on swords, knives, hooks or saddles, the engravings functioned as instruments to contact the spirits by Samans. But in the later ages, the engravings appeared on the gold and silver decorations of Turks and Mongolians, which had lost its original function and just served for beauty.
