Telakoya, a form of basic education, is a special type of mass education toward the end of Japanese Edo Bakufu Period. Its emergence and development carry a great significance in the history of Japan and its education, which cast considerable influence on Japanese Meiji Ishin and the later shaping of Japanese ideology. Through telakoya, Japan pushed systematic education in a special mode to cities and the rural areas, focusing not only on knowledge conveying but moral teaching as well. In fact, telakoya provided a base for Japanese elementary education after Meiji Ishin; it also made a great contribution to Meiji Ishin and the development of Japanese early modern education, laying the cultural foundation for contemporary Japanese.
