综观胡适与罗尔纲之间的师生姻缘,在私人的人际关系领域里,一个是一直盼望学生做出一番事业的老师;一个是恭谨领受师教,念兹在兹,努力以赴但求不违师教的学生。所以,学生写了在老师看来大有问题的文章,老师毫不客气地严加批评,学生更会将老师的教训引以为诫;学生在开展自己的事业途里碰上困境,也总是向老师请教,把老师的意见当成引领方向的南针。虽然,末了在现实政治力的作用下,师生的情谊被迫中断,甚至不免显示了师生反目的趋向,但是,这段师生佳话,却不是任何政治力量所能抹杀的。

The relationship between Hu Shih and Luo Ergang is as good as one can hope of a teacher and a student. The teacher cares the student deeply, pressing him with fierce criticism and high expectation. The student treats the teacher with utmost respect, taking him as the best advisor in time of difficulties. Though they had to separate paths under the pressure of politics, their once amicable relationship should transcend political distortions.
