Red and Black——The Real and False Face of YuLian

于连是法国杰出作家司汤达的代表作品《红与黑》中的主人公。他具有真与假、美与丑的二重性格,体现出当时社会关系的两极对立、矛盾和冲突。按照司汤达的本意,小说书名中的“红”象征着于连想成为拿破仑手下一名士兵; “黑”象征着于连不得不去当教士。纵观于连短暂一生的表现,不难发现:红是于连的真面孔,黑是于连的假面孔。红与黑共同组成了于连性格的二重性,同时,也共同促成了于连形象的悲剧性。

Yu Lian is the leading character in Red And Black which is the representive work of Stendhal, an outstanding French writer .He has dual character : real and false , beauty and ugliness , which reflect the contrast, contradiction and conflict between the two poles of the social relationship . According to Stendhals original idea , Red in the title symbolizes that Yu Lian wants to be a soldier under Napoleon ; Black symbolizes that Yu lian has to be a priest. surveying the happiness and sadness in Yu Lians short life . We can easily find out that: Red is YuLian's real face, while black is his false face. They both compose the duality of his character. Meanwhile, they impel YuLians image to be a tragedy.
