Objective:To pilot-test a rapid assessment procedure for injection safety in China and collect semi-quantitative and qualitative information on knowledge, attitude and practices regarding injections among physicians in health facilities in Shanghai. Methods: A standardized toolbox provided by Safe Injection Global Network (SIGN) was used to interview physicians. Additional information about injection practices was collected by focus group discussions. Results: An average of 87. 9 patients were received by a physician per week,of which 35. 2% would result in the prescription of an injection. Of 935 valid prescriptions reviewed,47. 8% contained at least one injection. Only 22% of 100 physicians perceived that they had prescribed too many injections. Conclusion: Injections are still popular in Shanghai instead of rising awareness about AIDS. Physicians may contribute to injection overuse.
