In writing nine historical plays about England, Shakespeare acquired a grave even anxious awareness of history, which naturally led him to write tragedies. Then since 1600,Shakespeare suddenly deviated from authentic history, entering into a remote legendary context with King Lear as its misty peak. What on earth is the overall meaning of this tragedy? Opinions vary greatly on this point. The present essay attempts to reinterpret King Lear by means of cultural anthropology and archetypal criticism.
