Expanded polystyrene(EPS) is an excellent light filler.EPS has a lot of good properties,such as long life span of use,good chemical stability,marked economical benefit,and convenience in construction,which is widely used in road,bridage,culvert and other a series of civil engineering. Useing EPS can decrease excessive subsidence and discrepant subsidence of soft subgrade,lighten vertical pressure of high fill on culverts, reduce lateral pressure and displacement of bridge piers and so on. Whereas the study of EPS in our country is in an initial stage, physical and chemical characteristics,mechanical properties and applications of EPS in road engineering are introduced and analyzed in the paper ,the aim is to improve the cognition of EPS and to lay a foundation for the wide use of it in the future.
