Peking Opera has been deemed as a "small opera" in Shanxi, a province boasting a great number of theater forms. Since its establishment half a century ago, Shanxi Peking Opera Troupe, though based in Shanxi but having a national audience in mind, has staged a number of new plays and nurtured a generation of rising young opera talents. The troupe is particularly famous for its outstanding repertoires of acrobatics and martial arts. The company has also produced some of the most famous Peking opera singers in China such as Li Shengsu and, apart from staging traditional plays, has recently paid more attention to the production of new plays, achieving satisfactory results.
