Exploring the Life Theme of Tree of Man

澳大利亚作家帕·怀特的《人树》具有多层次、多侧面的主题。本文作者认为其主题之一是对丛林人平凡而充实人生的颂扬。文章分析了作家通过两个强烈的对比揭示了现代都市人精神的苍白,并彰显了丛林人的平凡和伟大。并指出怀特在颂扬丛林拓荒者的同时,讽刺了某些澳大利亚人的实利主义和精神荒漠,以此来折射现代人空虚的生活。

Tree of Man is thematically multi- level and multi- facet.One of the themes is its high appreciation of the bushmen's ordinary but meaningful life. Through the strong contrasts between the bush world and the Sidney metropolitan and between the protagonist Stan and his daughter, Patrick White conveys to readers his contempt at metropolitans' spiritual desert as well as his high extolment of bushmen's full life.Although the life in the bush is simple and hard,it is close to the nature,which endows the bushmen with a kind heart and a sound mind. Antithetically,some Australians are utilitarian and live in a spiritual vacuum.White uses all these comparisons purposefully to expose the pitiable living status of his contemporaries.
