The Dongyuan site in southern Funing County of Jiangsu is an important Neolithic settlement in the Yangtze-Huaihe region. It occupies an area of about 3,500 sq m. In 1998-1999, it was explored by excavating an area of 810 sq m. The results include the revelation of a house-foundation,eight tombs, six ash-pits and 97 post-holes of the Neolithic Age. Among the unearthed objects are pottery and stone tools. The former constitutes the main part, fall into clay and charcoal-containing wares, andbear decorations in some cases, such as bow-string and incised designs. In cultural relics, the site is similar to the other contemporary ones in the Yangtze-Huaihe region and, in date, corresponds to the early Liangzhu or middle Dawenkou culture.
