作家常借用文学作品中的典故来更生动地表达自己的观点或感情。由于中英两种文化相差很大,用典的翻译给译者带来了很多困难。探讨了用典的四种翻译方法,即直译、直译加注、替代和再创造。译者必须识别哪些是典故,并决定采取什么策略来翻译。

Writers often allude to well - known texts in their own literature to give a sharper edge to the point they are making. As English culture is greatly difierent from Chinese culture, translators are likely to face greater difficulties in reproducing the meaning of an allusion. This paper discusses four strategies to translate the allusions: i. e. literal translation, literal translation with an incorporate footnote offering background infor-mation,replacement and recreation. A translator has to be able to recognize an allusion and decide which strategy he chooses to render it.
