Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors belonging to the nuclear hormone receptor family. The 3 isoforms of PPARs, which are PPARα, PPARβ/δ, and PPARγ, have different tissue distributions and cellular functions. PPARs are also found in the skin and are involved in the lipid metabolism and energy metabolism of skin cells and are closely related to proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes and the regulation of the secretion of fibroblasts, mediate the production of sebaceous glands and the maintenance of immune homeostasis. They also promote the differentiation of melanocytes and the maturation of melanosomes. Besides, they are beneficial for the promotion of hair follicles. Based on the biological effects of PPARs in the skin, PPAR agonists or antagonists may provide new opportunities for the treatment of various skin diseases.
