Atonement, a classic masterpiece by British author Ian McEwan, tells the story of Briony, the hero-ine, who, because of her youthful indulgence in fantasy and writing, makes a false accusation against her sister’s lover, Robbie, which leads to his unjustified imprisonment and death on the battlefield, resulting in the tragic tale of a pair of lovers not being able to be united. Through Freudian psycho-analytic theories of the unconscious and personality structure, this paper explains how Briony’s psychological changes from crime to atonement, from following the id, then finding the ego, then breaking through the ego and finally seeking the redemption of the superego during her growth from adolescence to adulthood, with a view to providing empirical and practical inspiration into the promotion of healthy personality development in adolescents.
