Feelings of anxiety are an unpleasant emotional experience, and being in a constant state of anxiety is detrimental to people’s health. Previous studies have shown that individuals with high levels of anxiety have impairments in the reward system. However, how anxiety affects the neurodynamic mechanisms of the reward system is unknown. In the present study, we used ERP technology with high temporal resolution to explore the effects of anxiety on reward processes through a monetary reward delay task. Our results show that anxiety impairs the feedback phase of reward, but has no effect on the anticipatory phase of reward. Our study provides insight into the neurodynamic mechanisms underlying the effects of anxiety on reward processes and provides evidence for the prevention and amelioration of anxiety with respect to reward.
