In the 1920s, French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs proposed the concept of “collective memory.” In the field of cinema, works based on real history often have their spiritual roots in collective memory. The spy thriller Cliff Walkers, directed by Zhang Yimou and released in 2021, is based on the anti-Japanese history of Harbin in the early 20th century. The film uses a novel narrative structure, exquisite camerawork, and unique aesthetic imagery to evoke the audience’s unconscious memories of history and heroes. This article attempts to analyze the visual storytelling elements of Cliff Walkers from the perspective of collective memory, in conjunction with heroic narrative theory.
