An Analysis of Liu Yunzhang’s Image of Loyalty and Treachery

刘允章是唐末政治风云中的典型人物,他因叛变投降黄巢起义军而载于史册,因而在史书上留下了逆臣的形象。但联系其早期的直谏书,可见其直谏的行为与叛变投降黄巢起义军的行为有明显的矛盾。通过对刘允章“谏”与“叛”这对看似矛盾行为的剖析,以探讨其背后的唐末士人政治风气,以及宋明之后儒家对“忠臣”评判的道德标准变化。

Liu Yunzhang is a typical figure in the political circles of the late Tang Dynasty. He was recorded in the history books because of his defection and surrender to the Huangchao Rebellion, thus leaving the image of a traitor in the history books. However, in connection with his early direct remonstrance to the emperor, it can be seen that his direct remonstrance was in obvious contradiction with his defection and surrender to the Huangchao Rebellion. Through the analysis of the seemingly contradictory behavior of Liu Yunzhang’s “remonstrance” and “treason”, this paper aims to explore the political atmosphere of the late Tang Dynasty and the changes in the moral standards of the Confucian evaluation of “loyal ministers” after the Song and Ming dynasties.
