Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is different from other violent relationships due to the relationship between the perpetrator and the victim. Victims tend to have low perceptions of IPV and are more likely to be victims of other violent behaviors. Using data from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this paper discusses definitions and types of IPV. In conjunction with a sample of general college students’ experiences with IPV (n = 110), it analyzes victims’ perceptions of and reactions to IPV, the factors that influence their perceptions, and the impact of IPV on victims.
