Cultural References (CRs), including Extralinguistic Cultural References (ECRs) and Intralinguistic cultural References (ICRs), cause translation problems and pose great challenge for subtitlers when they deal with the subtitles of audiovisual productions. Its quality, to a great extent, decides the translation quality of the whole audiovisual texts and determines the acceptance of the whole movie to the target language audience. The Chinese movie I am Not the Madame Bovary directed by the famous comedy director Feng Xiaogang has unique Chinese national characteristics and contains the core part of Chinese national values. This movie contains rich CRs involving philosophy, ethics, religion and some other Chinese cultural factors. Being descriptive in nature, this study explores the types of translation strategies employed by comparing the source text ECRs/ICRs from the movie I am Not the Madame Bovary with their corresponding subtitles in the target text. By quantifying the frequency of each strategy and by calculating the percentage of source-oriented strategies employed in subtitling this movie, certain trend about the subtitler’ decision-making is generalized.
